Guangzhou Opera Institute

A Brief Introduction

The Guangzhou Opera Institute was established in October 2003 as a nonprofit, private educational organization with a focus to promote the research and exchange of opera as a performing art of the highest level. The Institute was formed by a group of world-renowned artists led by Yun Dung, the first artist of Chinese descent to sign a contract with the world-class Metropolitan Opera in New York. Their mission is to promote operas, to nurture aspiring young artists and to fulfill the public¡¯s increasing demand for performance arts of the highest standard.

Taking advantage of its unique characteristics and available talents, the Academy will continue its development as an organization rooted in Guangzhou but promote and popularize nationally and internationally world-famous operas as well as operas reflecting unique Chinese characters and values. It will also facilitate the exchange of shared values among different cultures.

How We Plan to Grow

To further our mission to promote operas and musicals, to nurture young talented artists, to embrace the productions of a variety of operas and other musical performances, to produce operas and musical productions that reflect the distinctive characteristics of the Eastern cultures, we will intensely encourage and facilitate international exchanges. The steps we will be taking include the promotion of visits and performances by foreign music and arts organizations and the introduction of established music educational professionals to the Academy. In the meantime, we will also work hard to introduce Chinese operas and musicals to audiences in other parts of the world.

After two years of hard works, we believe we have firmly planted the seeds of operas development in Guangzhou; however, its continued growth, improvement and eventual maturity will depend on the persistent support, nurture, love and involvement by all concerns.
